Thought experiment re: the ‘99 team: What if they had lost? How would that tournament have been remembered? The crowds and attention were through the roof well before the result was determined. I can’t think of an example of a sport coming of age, dependent on a particular result, but the result doesn’t come to pass, but certainly there are examples.
