I was actually going to make a point of watching some of these games, and then I got caught up with other stuff this weekend and forgot about it.

At my first job, one of our writers begged off the Atlanta Olympics. Our lead Olympic writer was a mentor of mine and he requested that I be sent over two other options because I would do what I was told without bitching about it. Most of the stuff I covered was lower level, but I did get to cover the women's soccer team... Covering the Gold Medal game in Athens was the first major event I covered since graduating from college. I had covered a Final Four in college, but it wasn't the same thing.
Ever since I covered that game, I've always had a special place in my heart for the women's soccer team. I don't know how they are now, but I got to know the players on the 1996 team and I covered portions of the 1999 World Cup as well (not the final) and those women are some of the nicest people ever and just a delight to deal with.

This is probably as deep as the women's game has ever been, so this will be an interesting tournament. The best game (USA-France) may well end up being in the quarterfinals if things shake out the way they should.

Yes, but the U.S. won't stop. It's brutal. It's the World Cup, so I don't know what you'd want them to do, but it's rough. Can't look away, though.
