Thanks? People did notice, then, just not any of the media that’s in the tank for women’s soccer. I am looking at a USA Today with a Nancy Armour column headlined “No apologies needed.” I look forward to similar treatment of Lincoln Riley when they torch Kansas by 70. Regarding the goal differential rule, I can’t believe they don’t max it out. In travel baseball you can’t be credited with more than a +8 in any game. That’s an easy rule to implement. But women’s soccer is run very stupidly so I can see why they don’t have that. I understand what you're saying here, regarding the cheerleader treatment that the USWNT tends to get. But I'm equal opportunity here. I never mind an ass-kicking in sports. Giving one or taking one.

I guess the NYT decided against its blank front page depicting all the goals Thailand scored. They save that for really big things, like LeBron. Speaking of which, I'm surprised Crutchmer did not work in that page of LeBron walking away with no ring. That was an award-winner, you know.

My ignorance of soccer may be showing here, but did the US women pull its starters after it got out of hand? Or was it still the stars scoring goals 10, 11, 12 and 13?

Nobody likes fun celebrations more than me, but the excessive celebration as you're beating the shit out of a middle school team is a bit much.

If there aren't 24 competitive women's soccer teams in the world (and clearly there's not), maybe the tournament should be reduced to 16 or 20.

Nobody would be complaining if they did it to Iran.

If there aren't 24 competitive women's soccer teams in the world (and clearly there's not), maybe the tournament should be reduced to 16 or 20. Honestly, that's a big part of the problem. There are really only 8-10 enticing games in the whole tournament. The Japan/Argentina draw was only the seventh in WWC history (not sure if that counts the 1991 and 1995 cups). While fewer draws is a good thing, it's a good indication of the lopsidedness of the playing field. Thailand supporting a women's team is a nice story, but the difference in talent identification, funding and training is a chasm. (It would be the same story with a good men's team and the Thailand men's team.) I still think the goal differential thing is BS, and it might have helped the team more moving forward to work on moving the ball around versus running constantly at an overmatched defense. No, it's not beanbag, and it's the Thai players' job to stop us from kicking their asses. But compare the women of the Thai team, who I'm sure all hold down regular jobs and aren't pros in any meaningful sense, to our celebrity roster. On the other hand, if the USWNT had won 7-0 with no controversy, would the game have been given more than 30 seconds on First Take? They're just building buzz!
