When did they go back to East vs West. Didn't watch, but saw on the menu Wasn't it two guys drafting teas the last few years? This year. That's what the announcers kept trying to hype. It was going to be more competitive because of conference pride. Ahh. think I watched some of the first year it was players drafting teams, but not since.

All-Star Games in all sports are pretty silly, at this point. I mean, the players barely care about the regular season, let alone an exhibition. people sill bag on MLB, but I think since the tie game it's been pretty good. the old way of alternating home-field advantage kind of was a joke when an 85-win team can have it over a 105-win team so the winning league getting it isn't so bad.

MLB doesn't do that any more, though. Now it's home field advantage to the team with the best record in the World Series. The weirdest was those few years when they just had a DH in the World Series for both teams - wildly advantageous to the A.L. team.

I figured the All-Star Game wasn’t long for this world when the in-season tournament was such a success.

All-Star selections is still used in baseball Hall of Fame discussions as a factor. It's ludicrous, really - it's based on half a season, and the fans vote on a significant percentage of the selections. I suppose over the course of a career, great players are likely to bag at least a few such nods, but there are such better ways.

LOL. It’s like when people argue Kobe Bryant’s greatness by screaming that “he was MVP of the All-Star Game FOUR times!!!”
That’s fine. Naming the trophy after him was a great idea, but let’s stop pretending that being the “MVP” of a game where no one plays a lick of defense is in any way impressive.

I saw a few highlights of Dame launching 3s from half court and I’m kind of glad I didn’t watch. Am I wrong, or did they used to play this in mid-afternoon? That wasn't bad - gave you something to throw on the TV with football over. But watching this in prime time ... geesh, spring training can't come soon enough. And, to be clear, I don't blame the players one bit. It was an afternoon game from mid-70s at least until the mid-90s. I went to the 1990 game in Miami in the afternoon. Weirdly, it was a night game from 1968-76 . . . and didn't start until 10 p.m. in 1971 and 1972,

Looks like it's been in prime time for at least the last 15 years, as far back as I looked. It also looks like 2014 and after is when the scoring started to get out of control.
I think Joe Posnanski wrote about this recently, but I miss the days where something in sports other than winning a championship mattered to people. There's no putting the toothpaste back into the tube, although the WBC and the NBA in-season tournament at least were both a positive move back the other direction.

Winning your conference should be the annual goal in college football. It still is for me. Although doing it in a 16-team conference is worlds tougher than the 10-team SEC I grew up with.
Now it's just "maybe if we're third best we can sneak into the playoffs."

No matter how pointless the NBA All-Star Game ever gets, college football will still be America’s dumbest sport by a country mile.

Well, how many years were the Atlanta Braves in the NL West, the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC East?

Well, how many years were the Atlanta Braves in the NL West, the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC East? When I was a kid, the White Sox were in the A.L. West, playing the Angels, Mariners, and A's some ungodly number of times a year after my bedtime. Meanwhile, the Brewers were a 90-minute bus ride away. So I get it.

Why is college football the dumbest sport? And what is the connection to the NBA All-Star Game? The only connection is that BTE mentioned it in the post before mine, and I try to never miss an opportunity to take a shot at the sport and its ludicrous way of determining a “champion.”
