I don’t understand why nowadays fudgepacking has to be in everyone’s faces.

The modern American’s burning desire to be offended is something to behold. I'm not sure who's offended. ... "We're going to make an LGBT+ Wizard of Oz!" and it's a story everywhere. And, there aren't any details. It's just a big deal, because they said LGBT. And, how to you work a character's sexuality into this storyline? Is the Tin Man going to drop a casual reference to an ex-boyfriend? It's just silly, because it's unnecessary to the story. Would you prefer bothered to offended? I'll go with bothered. Because here's the thing: it's not "a story everywhere." It, in the grand scheme, is a story almost nowhere. It's a lead item in a notebook from a trade publication that's basically an ad. It isn't even about making an "LGBT+ Wizard of Oz." That's not what it says. But it's got you bothered enough you're out over your skis on it. (Shoot, that tweet itself barely has any interaction that doesn't involve political whining) I don't know how they'll work it in. I also don't particularly care. They managed to work James Franco in, and that women whose voice was in Frozen, so they'll figure it out. And if/when they do, I'll do my due diligence of barely caring. But I leave you to being weirdly precious about a story that's been done up in a bunch of different ways for ... um, reasons.

It's just silly, because it's unnecessary to the story. "My ex-boyfriend broke my heart, so I need a new one." Easy peasy Japaneasy.

If you read the piece, the idea is that the original movie was an allegory about its time, and so he’s aiming to make this one allegorical about this time. Artists can be goofy and sometimes they hit and sometimes they miss and, well, so what? The source material doesn’t strike me as sacrosanct.

Denslow. Those men wrote a darling book 120 years ago, and you WILL treat it with a level of respect just short of the bible.

So they aim a movie at a gay audience, then bitch and moan that straight people don't come to see it. Professional victims.

I absolutely plan to watch Bros when it comes out on HBO or whatever streaming service it lands on. I think Billy Eichner is hilarious.
But I’m not going to the theater for any kind of rom-com. Honestly, only action movies like Top Gun make me want to go to the theater.

It's the second-highest grossing rom-com of the year. (No one sees rom-coms)

I feel like all of us who consider ourselves allies let down our gay friends.
And they are letting us know how disappointed they are in us.
There is no easy way to say it: When the reviews are this sensational, the marketing support is this substantive and the theatrical footprint is this wide — and ticket sales are nonetheless this low — it suggests outright marketplace rejection.
“Bros,” the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio, arrived to an estimated $4.8 million in ticket sales in the United States and Canada, about 40 percent less than the low end of prerelease analyst expectations. Universal Pictures booked “Bros” onto 3,350 screens and spent an estimated $30 million to $40 million to promote it. “Bros,” starring Luke Macfarlane and Billy Eichner, who also co-wrote the script, cost roughly $22 million to make. It received mostly positive reviews.
Yet it was a distant fourth at the weekend box office. “We’ll see where we go from here,” Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, said by phone on Sunday. “We’re incredibly proud of the film, and I really believe there is going to be great word of mouth.” … Universal’s marketing campaign for “Bros” started in May and emphasized its comedic bona fides; producers included Judd Apatow, the force behind hits like “Trainwreck” and “Bridesmaids,” and Nicholas Stoller, known for “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” Mr. Stoller also directed “Bros” and co-wrote the script. In August and September, Universal brought “Bros” to film festivals and screened exclusive footage in cities across the United States. Mr. Eichner aggressively promoted the movie, appearing on almost every major talk show and reviving his popular “Billy on the Street” comedy series.
Going into the weekend, stars like Chris Evans, Seth Rogen and Mariah Carey pleaded with people on Twitter to buy tickets for “Bros.”

Just out of curiosity, I looked up the highest grossing rom-coms ever.
No. 1 on the list, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” grossed that much in a single weekend only once, and that was only after it had been in theaters for a month and a half.
So maybe we should pump the brakes before we declare this movie a failure.

I'm not sure why it's considered some major neener neener victory for conservatives that this movie isn't doing "Avengers: End Game" business.

So maybe we should pump the brakes before we declare this movie a failure. My Big Fat Greek Wedding was an indie film, that had a limited release, before getting a wider release months after it had already been out, based on word of mouth. I'm pretty sure it was already in airplanes by the time it got a wide release. It certainly didn't have "an estimated $30 million to $40 million to promote it." That rom-coms might not do huge numbers is a fair point, but the point here is that it missed it's expected number -- by a lot -- not that it didn't do Spiderman numbers. It's also getting its ass kicked by Don't Worry Darling.
