Xan - Have you gotten body fat measurements? They might be a better indicator of where you are than weight at this point.

When I started jogging last fall I ponied up for some modestly priced Nike running shoes. I hardly wear them for anything other than jogging or working out at the Y, so there's very little wear on the soles and they look perfectly fine. However, this last month or so my left leg has gotten pretty troublesome. The knee, which I hurt in November, hasn't gotten any worse, but the hamstring has begun to flare, and I've really been dialing things back to avoid that booger tearing. Could it be that my shoes need replacing?

I bought shoes about 2 months ago and they fucking suck. Today the muscles in the top of my right foot near the ankle got sore after the mileage.
I can never seem to find the right pair of cardio shoes.

Could it be that my shoes need replacing? I doubt it. I've been using the same shoes for an ungodly number of miles this summer and have been injury-free. It's like with oil changes - they can go longer than the standard advice.

I may still look into different shoes. Perhaps these aren't worn out, but I simply need more cushioning.

I run in my year-old New Balance without socks.

Well piss on y'all, then. Here I was hoping the solution to the problem was something I could buy. Instead, I have to face the reality that I'm a broken-down old man!

Really depends on your weight, gait, wear pattern, typical running surface, etc. If you tend to go the cushion route, you’re likely going to notice the wear sooner. You can stretch it with strategic insole use, but it might be wise to replace them at around 500 miles. If you wear them for other uses, that accelerates need for replacement.

Rono wore shoes and is one of the most interesting stories of rise and fall you can find. What a talent.
