Put it this way: Bobby Fischer, when he still walked among us, would advise during a particular move of the middle game, of the thousands of possible moves that could be made, that a player move his bishop from one square to another. He would advise so for very particular reasons. There is a reason that bishop in square X is a more optimal move than bishop to square Y. There are reasons that bishop to square X is more optimal than, say, knoght to square Z. Now, I wouldn’t know what those reasons are, but if I asked Bobby Fischer, I’m sure he could explain it. And the explanation is not: “Because Bobby Fischer decided so.” Drake can take his shots at me for staying near Chicago and misdirect everything to my motives rather than my argument. Ty can declare, again, “YOU’RE the problem, Whitman!” and nuke. JC can accuse me of trying to be a “cool kid.” And I can, as I have, admit that I’m no longer - if I ever was - a good fit to interact on these two boards. But, goddamnit. none of that alters the fact that I am right about this. Experts don’t get to simply set truths by fiat. If they did, then we would still be using wins as the most effective means of evaluating a pitcher. And we would still hold it as self-evident that the sun orbits the Earth. But somewhere along the line, some expert swallowed his ego for a brief moment and said, “Well, what if the troll has a point?” You ask one honest question about soccer instead of mocking or offering snark and you expect people to believe you’re sincere? I'm not going to go to the mats on this, at all, but I will simply state again that the content of this thread simply doesn't support the assertion. And most of the snark is pretty meta - we're making fun of making fun of soccer as much or more than we're making fun of soccer itself. These boards - before the Mothership got so damn earnest, at least - have always included a certain amount of healthy snark. It's a sports writer thing. Maybe a journalist thing, in fact. I get it, though. It's the whole, "You can make fun of your own family, but someone else better not" concept at work.

(Checks old posts) I don't believe I used the word "experts." And dudes trying to dispute the idea that anyone could possibly have a superior knowledge and experience to them, is very Former Sports Journalist. In the business, we all had to believe we could become well-versed in any topic quickly, Because Journalism. We live in a society. It is unassailable fact that some people are in position to know more than others in regard to certain subjects. But that doesn't prevent others from thinking that going Scorched Earth Pound the Rock Until It Shatters Or Quits in every argument because dammit, EVERY OPINION IS JUST AS WORTHWHILE AS ANOTHER. (1) You are responding to an imaginary post. Well . . . that's simply not true. And people who refuse to accept that others are more well-versed in certain subjects, are simply defending their own self-appointed right to be shrill. It's very 2019. (2) See (1). There are many things on which I cannot speak with authority. Note that pretty much all of my political posts are snark and attempts at poor humor. I don't follow the topic as much as others, and never worked in politics. I would not presume to argue the law; I can only go on what Legal Knowers have to say about the U.S. Soccer dispute. It's a better message board not when dudes try to tell others on every subject that "I know things and my opinion matters and you will listen!" but when it's understood that in a particular case, the Other Person really does have a better handle on things. And there comes a point when further attempts to argue are based on one's own pointless need to achieve some kind of "victory" for themselves while calling it "clarity" or some other weasel word. We cannot all be geniuses on every single topic. Sometimes we are just wrong, sometimes we do not know what we are talking about, especially in comparison to those who have made it their business to learn, analyze, and know that particular subject. It's wise to accept that, and cut bait as opposed to going Scorched Earth Pound the Rock Until It Shatters Or Quits in every single discussion. (3) I was literally begging you to use said knowledge to explain it to me. You responded by telling me I'm sheltered because I live in Chicago. *Shrug*

When you let "experts" --- say, the State Department --- declare things as truth without evidence (or dismissing evidence to the contrary), then they have carte blanche to tell you things they WANT you to believe, knowing they are free to execute policy based on this "information." The example I always go back to is with doctors. They’re experts. Their opinions are more valid than mine. Their field is largely dependent on subjective evaluations. But since they’re experts, they’re the ones who make those determinations. And just like anything, there are good doctors (i.e., “experts”) and bad doctors (i.e., “not experts”).

Christ Almighty. Get a life, Whitman. Not responsive.

Why would I listen to the franchise-related declarations of some sports jockey when general managers have written books and given their own views? Why would I listen to Bill James instead of Chicago White Sox general manager Ken "The Hawk" Harrelson, who is happy to share his views?

Is it wrong to wish that A.J. Pierzynski had not caught that foul ball headed straight for Hawk's coconut last year?

Whitman: The argument was over and we were discussing things again in this thread. But you just can't let anything go. You're still crying about typefitter and other imagined enemies at the old place (the posts here saying "I really think in a different venue we could have gotten along" were priceless). So . . . Let me help you out. I ain't leaving. I ain't taking a break. So keep pounding. Keep thinking everyone else has something wrong with them. You do you, man. You do you. I don't know what any of this has to do with anything. I haven't gotten personal with you at all. You get personal with me in every response.

He's saying experts aren't right JUST BECAUSE they're experts. He's asking them to show their work. Explain why what they're saying is right (show, don't tell, right?). As experts, with their education and knowledge and insight, when they make an assertion they should be able to clearly explain why that assertion is correct rather than simply saying, "It's correct because I'm an expert and I know these things."

Dick, I say this with love ... stop with the defeatist attitude. It's funny that you can sprint 15-18-20-23 miles a pop and have a killer instinct in the arena of law ... ... but somehow balance that with a woe is me everyone hates me cuz I'm different tack. Stop. You're not nuking. You need a break for the joint? Fine, take a day or two off. But more important, the woe is me everyone hates me thing is unbecoming of a killer shark. All sharks are insecure, for better or worse. Hey!

I don't know what any of this has to do with anything. I haven't gotten personal with you at all. You get personal with me in every response. Enough with this Eddie Haskell crap. You've pushed enough people to their breaking point to know exactly what it looks like. If you wanna take this as a "victory" feel free. You can continue to turn this on me all you want, and I understand that as goes a poster, he carries his history with him. That being the case, it is fair to mention that 90 percent of your responses, across all social media, impugn either the speaker or the speaker’s motives. Speaker: Critics seem to be coalescing around the idea that the Stones opening night show in Chicago, in light of Mick’s health problems, deserves a spot in the pantheon of Stones live performances. Robert Drake: Sheltered Chicago guy thinks something in Chicago is the best ever. Shocking! Speaker: It’s bothersome that Deadspin cuts and pastes this extensively. Robert Drake: You’re just still mad they scooped your friends on Manti Te'o. Impugn, impugn, impugn. You may think your ad hominem attacks make you edgy, take-no-prisoners, a “sonofabitch.” You may justify them - and have - by proclaiming that your targets deserve it. All they do, in actuality, are reveal you as insecure, defensive, overly sensitive*, and small, and no amount of lines on your 20-page CV changes that. For two decades, you have had two core go-tos, when you are goaded into one of your little grown-up fits: 1. “Midwesterners are unsophisticated and insular.” This is not uncommon among coastal natives who matriculate to “flyover” country for college or work. I was friendly with everyone on my various beats, but, man, did I hear some version of this a million times. In a discussion, it's unresponsive. 2. “Sports journalists are unsophisticated and stupid.” Is this generally true? I have no idea. But it doesn’t matter. Used by you, it’s always a dodge. Now you can continue to roll out whatever applause lines about me that you want, and I have no doubt they will gain some traction among some minority of posters. We know from the most recent general election that people tend to favor a zinger over substance. I’ve copped to my flaws. I’ve copped to this being a "bad fit." But anyone who wants to exercise any objectivity - and that includes most of the dudes I’ve ever feuded with, because they generally have about as much use for you as they do for me - having read this digression, would realize that in this case: It’s. Fucking. You. * Hacked off about the Alex Morgan bikini photo? Really? Really? There is literally nobody on the Internets who has been more critical of Morgan's attention-whoring than one Robert Drake.
