My point wasn’t that presidents sometimes do shady things. My point was that the reaction to those things used to be more than ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Like we once expected a president to act with some sense of honesty, maturity and dignity. How quaint. This is insane. What political, or other, price did Obama pay for the Bergdahl deal, the "you can keep your doctor" bullshit, lying to America about the Iran deal, etc.? He remains popular. Would have won a third term if eligible to run, and the media still loves him. And, as a real thought experiment, let's imagine if the media had covered him critically for eight years, instead of serving as his personal PR team. Let's also remember how prickly he got over any criticism. You think he's still be Mr. Calm if his shady actions received half the scrutiny that Trump receives.

And, btw, we all pretty much assumed that the New York City real estate developer, who'd emerged from $900M in debt probably had some shady dealings in his past.
And, for two years, we've been investigating a fucking hoax, that somehow Russia and the Trump campaign colluded to coordinate campaign strategy.

You were the kid in the school lunchroom stewing over how the kids at the popular table could get away with whatever they wanted, weren't you?

Let's also remember how prickly he got over any criticism. You think he's still be Mr. Calm if his shady actions received half the scrutiny that Trump receives. An entire 24/7 “news” operation and half the country endlessly scrutinized and screeched over every move Obama made — whether as major as breaking the law regarding POW exchanges or as minor as using a fucking paper clip. He’s been called every name that Trump has been called, with a few racist chain emails and Internet memes thrown in on top of it. An Obama lie about Bowe Bergdahl resulted in congressional hearings involving the highest levels of military officials. Trump tells a dozen lies every single goddamn day. And, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I also suggest you look up the media coverage of the Bergdahl deal. As pertains to the aforementioned “complex situations,” the details were made public and Obama was held to account. It just so happened that enough people deciddd he made the right choice, however unsavory. It’s almost as if not being an unrelenting asshole will garner you some good will and benefit of the doubt with the public. Diplomacy used to be part of the presidency.

There isn't a single good young sharp as a tack Dem who can deliver a cutthroat response?
This is the problem.

For the SOTU, it's not usually the opposition party's leaders in the House or Senate who give the response. This is short notice, and it's a campaign year, so maybe they didn't want to play favorites, but I'll be curious to see how they do.

We know what they'll say. We know how they'll sound. Boring without a lick of inspiration.

I was hoping they would choose AOC. Every time Pelosi looks at her, I get the vibe of, "Who let you come over from the kiddie table? This is where adults eat."

Of course, those "adults" are eating up donations from health care PACs, the NRA, etc., so the girl has a point!
