Is that really true? The stories I keep reading say that while many THOUGHT cursive would be dead by now, but not only are schools still teaching it, but some states have passed laws over the past couple of years mandating it (Louisiana and Arkansas, to name just two). From the NYT link: Most schools, parochial or otherwise, no longer teach penmanship — and only about 10 states still retain cursive writing requirements in their curriculum guides. In 2014, Florida added cursive writing to its learning requirements for the third, fourth and fifth grades. |

My health care quality students did group presentations the other night on a technique known as FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis), where you ask about a process, what could go wrong, what are the consequences, what can we do to prevent it, etc. ... Given the backgrounds of the students, several presentations dealt with pharmaceutical errors. It is astounding to me that: 1) in this day and age so many millions of such errors occur every year; b) what a large proportion of those errors can be traced to bad prescriber handwriting; and iii) that it's still legal to handwrite prescriptions.

Good Lord do conservatives hate this woman. I don't hate her in the least. In fact, I'd kind of like to see her mature into something along the lines of a Patrick Moynihan ... a liberal who actually knows his/her shit and nudges things in interesting directions from time to time. What I do hate is how much very, very sloppy "thinking" she's being allowed to get away because of what she is. Maybe this is as good as she's got ... there's no shame in that ... but she's never going to get anywhere from the pedestal she's been put on. |

Manual recount is on in Florida Senate. Broward had 26,000 undervotes. Nelson's lawyer keeps saying machine error, and if he's right, Nelson will win. But it's far more likely those people missed the race on the ballot and didn't vote.
