My dear friend YF: If Trump’s Veteran’s Day appearance in France wasn’t canceled by the secret service, then why haven’t any reporters revealed it to be? Huh? Just John Kerry and David Frum speculating eh? Gabriel Sherman: Oh sorry. How you like them apples? Trump remained in a dark mood during his weekend trip to France to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. As The Washington Post reported, he got into an argument with British Prime Minister Theresa May during a phone call on the flight across the Atlantic on Friday. On Saturday morning, Trump skipped attending a rain-soaked ceremony at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery to honor the Battle of Belleau Wood. When his absence became a scandal, the White House said the decision had been made because Marine One reportedly could not fly in the rain, and Secret Service did not want Trump traveling by motorcade. One Republican briefed on the internal discussions said the real reason Trump did not want to go was because there would be no tent to stand under. “He was worried his hair was going to get messed up in the rain,” the source said. “[John] Bolton and everyone was telling him this was a big mistake.” A former administration official said Trump hates being outside in wet conditions. “What I honestly think? He woke up and said, ‘It’s pouring rain. This is a joke and I’m not doing this.’” www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/11/trumps-post-midterms-blues-roil-the-white-houseDD, I'm sorry, but you would not report about a football coach's decision this way? We have an anonymous "republican" who claims to have been "briefed" on the decision? Can we get some reporting that's based in fact? Like, from a source inside the military, or Secret Service, or even from Trump's staff? With apologies to Baron, but let's run through an analogy. Football coach says his decision to not use a player was based on a recommendation from the team doctor. Reporters think this is bullshit. But, instead of getting the scoop from the player, or the team doctor, who if the coach is lying, has been thrown under the bus, we instead get anonymously sourced story quoting a "person involved with the sport of football" who was briefed on the internal discussion? It's honestly sad that political reporting is less serious than sports and/or entertainment reporting. Look, I don’t disagree, but you only care about these standards when they go against your man. You literally don’t care at all when they make Democrats look bad. If fact you’re gleeful about this kind of reporting when it suits you. “Briefed” could mean many things here. Could mean the source is actually Kelly and he was briefed by Conway on what the truth was. Could be the other way around, since we know Kellyanne loves to speak to reporters as a source but not be quoted. (Sanders does too, which is why so many WhiteHouse reporters flipped out when she got made fun of as the WHCD.) Could be any one of two dozen people within the administration. What we do know is that Sherman has a track record of being right, that he doesn’t make shit up, that he’d have to inform his editor who his anonymous source is. As far as I’ve seen, the WhiteHouse hasn’t pushed back on any previous Vanity Fair reporting. We know Sherman has tons of Republican sources from his work on Fox News, Ailes, and his reporting on the Kushners. You’re not mad at the sourcing. You love the sourcing when it’s about Bill Clinton and Air Fuck One, or Webb Hubbel being Chelsea’s Real Dad, or Uranium One being a scam to fund the Clinton Foundation. Don’t pretend it’s the journalism that bugs you here.

Stipulating all of this reporting about melancholy Trump is true, then why? Is he simply in shock over losing the House? Taking it personally? He knows they're going to subpoena his taxes.

I get a kick out of folks like Sherman, who have no access to Trump, who write things like, "Trump remained in a dark mood during his weekend trip to France." Or, the LA Times Eli Stokols, who says multiple sources have told him that, "Trump has retreated into a cocoon of bitterness and resentment." www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-trump-absent-20181113-story.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitterA cocoon of bitterness and resentment? LOL. Let's be clear, no one told Eli this. The idea that multiple sources told him this is laughable. No one even talks like that. Meanwhile, a reporter who did spend time with Trump reports just the opposite regarding his mood: So, you're saying these reporters are making it up?

By the way, i’ll put Gabe Sherman’s career and track record up against serial plagiarist and conservative hack Benny Johnson’s any day.

God I can’t wait until this asshole isn’t president any more and everyone can go back to evaluating things like sourcing and framing with clear eyes again.

“Just trust us” journalism is my favorite kind of journalism. You say that all the time, but your alternative seems to be never using anonymous sources. You’re very righteous about this. So how does, say, a Ronan Farrow or Jane Meyer write about Weinstein or the Koch Brothers without anonymous sources? Should they just burn all the sources AJ Dauliero style to eliminate any confusion?

I understand you have to use anonymous sources sometimes, but the sourcing YF pointed out is a joke, and no one will address it head-on. Instead you are all pivoting to anonymous sourcing, generally. I was supposed to just trust Bob Woodward, even when I can’t tell if a quote is on the record, second hand, third hand. Can’t tell. Now I am supposed to trust this guy that Trump has “retreated into a cocoon of bitterness and resentment.” A novelist wouldn’t even write that line. But just trust him. Because.

The Weinstein story would not have run without at least one on the record source. Anonymous sources backed up the reporting, but were not the totality of it.
With the Trump reporting we usually get people who don’t claim to have been in the room, witnessed what happened, or heard the conversation. We get people who are familiar with what happened or who were briefed on it, which doesn’t even mean they necessarily have second hand information.
We don’t know what level they’re at, or if they’re actually in a position to know the details they claim to have.
We also know that sources have lied to reporters in order to try and make others look bad, or to have others fall under suspicion for leaking. One told us he uses mimics other verbiage to set up rivals.
Now, if, knowing this, and in that environment, you want to base a story on one anonymous “Republican”, go ahead, but don’t expect me to believe it.
And, you guys can let me know if any of you believe that multiple sources told Eli that Trump had retreated into a cocoon of bitterness and resentment.

George Lucas wrote better dialogue than, “retreated into a cocoon of bitterness and resentment.”

The Chicago Tribne is reporting, based on multiple sources, that in the days before his firing, Hawks coach Joel Quenneville had retreated into a cocoon of bitterness and resentment.
LOL. Imagine a reporter writing that. He wouldn’t be able to show his face at the United Center again. He’s be laughed out of town.

I don't think you've read much sportswriting if you think those kind of lines don't get written regularly, based on lots of time spent around a subject and sources around him. Shall I pull up some of Woj's columns about LeBron and the Olympics? Wickersham's piece about Brady and Belchick? Reilly's famous piece about Bryant Gumble?
