This is one of those mornings you wish you could post at the other board, I think. Why? So we they could mock the source of information there, too?

A lot of it comes down to some things that are pretty basic. Parents who eat right and exercise are likely to raise kids that also eat right and exercise. Parents who are overweight will likely raise kids who are overweight. Parents who lack patience, and who yell and scream, will raise kids that behave this way. And, if you are anxious and depressed, it's likely that your kids will be too. As parents, we model behavior. Good and bad. And if you are constantly fretting about Donald Trump, climate catastrophe, abortion access and gun control, then I'm not sure how your kids would not be IMPACTED by that. If you are constantly fretting about Hunter Biden, Joe Biden, American not being great again, people who don't live, worship, and love like you, and those damn foreigners, I'm not sure how your children would not be affected by that.

Look, maybe the Institute for Family Studies and the Washington Examiner are just looking to own the Libs. They are being really mean. But, is there any validity to the claim? Certainly how kids are raised matters, right? And a lot of this is commons sense. Would any of you be surprised if the kids of my favorite internet liberals were anxious, or depressed? Are Liz's kids anxious and depressed? Can you imagine if Taylor Lorenz had kids? No, there is not validity to a study that begins with that sort of bias.

What an odd response. I think America could do better that Joe Biden -- and could do better than Donald Trump too -- but I'm not constantly "fretting" about either Biden. I have very low expectations of government, so I am rarely let down. People who are most dependent on government, I would assume, are the ones who worry about who is in charge of government the most. Not sure where the bit about people "people who don't live, worship, and love like" me came from. That's never been an issue for me, and is certainly not anything I fret about. Foreigners? LOL. You are so off base. Immigrants inspire me daily. I deal with immigrants all the time, and I'm awed by them, and their experiences. We could all learn a lot from the immigrants in our communities. But, the biggest mistake you make here is to assume that I discuss world politics with my seven-year-old. We talk about morals, and how to treat people. We talk about sexism, racism, and other evils. But we don't talk about partisan politics. If my daughter even knew what a republican or a democrat was, she would have no way of knowing which one I am.

It goes without saying that both conservatives and liberals can have children who thrive with regards to mental health, and children who struggle. And, that can change over time. My child is seven. I have no claim to have it all figured out. But there are certainly best practices. To me, raising kids with confidence is really important. Not a sense of false confidence, but a sense that they can do things, because they have done things, is crucial. And, giving them the confidence that they can overcome hard times and touch situations. I found this podcast/interview interesting. It'w with George Zimmer, the founder of the clothing retailer Men's Warehouse. He's asked on a couple of occasions why, in the absence of date, facts or experience, why he thought various ideas/initiatives/advertising wold work. And each time, he responds that his mother just raised him with an incredible degree of confidence. He just believed that he couldn't fail. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mens-wearhouse-george-zimmer/id1150510297?i=1000434932547Now, that might be the definition of false confidence, but it worked for him. I've never felt like I couldn't fail. I just felt like even if I did fail, I'd still be ok, and would be able to move on.

No. oop won't ruin it. (That was your concern, right?) Yes. oop always thinks I look at everything through a partisan lens. Know, obviously this story had politics at its forefront, but he projects way more than I ever will. The assumptions he makes about me always make me chuckle. He couldn't be more off base.

Keeping your constituents in perpetual fear has been a bedrock of the Left for decades. On right-wing radio, there are a handful of staple advertising messages: ---We could be on the verge of a societal collapse. Protect yourself with Patriot Supply, which can provide months of ready-to-eat meals which will last for 25 years. ... ---Our economy is teetering on the brink. You need to diversify with gold, and here's how to make this global form of currency part of your portfolio. ... ---Is the IRS hounding you? Optima Tax Relief can get them off your back and cut your tax bill by thousands. ... If that's not fear-based messaging, I don't know what is.

Also, the last two are pretty tame compared to generations of being told you are incapable of succeeding* because people hate you/deny your existence/want to kill you. The Left had a significant head-start in the politics of fear porn. *Unless you vote for me/us.

Now that I’ve calmed down a bit, a few thoughts (in no particular order):
— Boiling down something as nebulous and complicated as “mental health” to which politicians or political positions you support is hackery, plain and simple. And, yes, I know The Examiner didn’t “publish” the “study,” but I’m uniquely qualified to say that, in a landscape of partisan hackery, the Examiner is King. — Of course environmental factors affect kids. But for every one that’s irreparably damaged by a barrage of doom and gloom by partisan hack parents, there are a dozen others who are affected even in perfect conditions. — I have parented in every which way known to humankind, and ALL of it blew up in my face. Because my being mean to Trump didn’t fundamentally alter my son’s brain chemistry. And we increasingly know that brain chemistry plays a role in just about all of these mental health conditions. — This is really just another example of what I’ve believed for a long while: Americans (no one in particular) love to argue about things that don’t matter. Instead of having a real conversation about mental health and how to lessen the very real crisis in our children, we get arguments like this.

This is common sense stuff. The most important factor in the mental health of adolescent children is the quality of the relationship with their caregivers. This, in turn, is strongly related to parenting practices—with the best results coming from warm, responsive, and rule-bound, disciplined parenting. The data also reveal the characteristics of parents who engage in best-practices and enjoy the highest quality relationships. ifstudies.org/blog/parenting-is-the-key-to-adolescent-mental-healthAlmost all of the things I hate most about myself can be traced to the “rule-bound, disciplined parenting” I endured as a child.
