Yeah, I was just wondering why he was being so defensive and combative about it. This definitely explains that. A lot of people would also do well to remember that COVID likely changed moviegoing trends and habits permanently. Definitely changed mine. When it comes to anything other than a big tent action blockbuster, I just figure it's coming to Netflix or Amazon Prime first and skipping the theater. Theaters are where you go to watch Pixar, "Star Wars," and MCU movies. I very rarely go to movies, even prior to pandemic, but I still think there’s something to seeing: (1) the work of “auteur” directors on the big screen, even if not action-packed—definitely glad I saw Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Licorice Pizza in theaters, to name the last two movies I’ve been to; and (2) funny comedy in packed crowd— Borat was a great movie-going experience, for example.

Billy Eichner's shtick is funny for a minute or two at a time, dropping in one shouted line or two amongst an ensemble, but I can't imagine going to the theater to see a movie in which he's the lead.
A little different because it was streaming, but wasn't Fire Island a hit recently?

I didn't know until today that Nate Silver is gay. With the poker and sabermetrics background, I just figured he was a straight guy. (Not that I'd put any prior thought into deciphering Nate Silver's sexuality.)

The Billy on the Street schtick for which he's most known for is basically a character he plays (and then pretty much played again on Park and Rec). I found both hilarious, but I get why it wouldn't be for everyone.
He was in a Netflix show called Friends from College where he was pretty much the opposite, and he was great in it. And it doesn't look like he's playing that schtick character in Bros either. Like jake said, that character is better in short bursts, not for 90 minutes.
I do think he's probably right, that straight audiences just aren't going to be into a gay rom-com, at least not enough to pay money and leave the house to see it. But I don't think that's why the movie flopped. It was just a niche of a niche genre that doesn't draw well.

Anecdotal, but I MAY HAVE seen three ads for Bros the last few months and never had any indication it was going to be a theatrical exclusive. (Not that I was going to go see it in the theater opening weekend, or maybe ever, but still.) The marketing department did not do its job.

I was going to ask: What did they spend that $40 million promotion budget on? Because I didn’t even know the movie existed until it was posted on this thread.
I have no idea if I’m in the target audience or not. I would think I am, just because I live in a liberal homosex-infested wasteland. And nothing even entered my orbit.

I just really don't see movie commercials/trailers anymore unless I'm physically at the movies. The only time I would have possibly seen one over the past month was during a football or baseball game, but I definitely didn't.

I saw one commercial for it on an ESPN+ stream of a Sun Belt Conference football game, and also had no idea it was being released last weekend in theaters.

Good to know conservative parts of the MSM think it's worth covering.

Shit, I just remembered: Billy Eichner also played Matt Drudge in the FX mini-series about the Lewinsky/Clinton scandal.

I was under the impression he was out, but I am basing that on absolutely nothing.

Well I don't remember watching it and thinking "I didn't know Matt Drudge was gay." I was mostly laughing at the silly hats he wore.
