This seems like a weird phenomenon, which is being embraced by the media.
Whatever consenting adults do is fine with me, but -- and not very differently than the JonBenet style beauty contests -- these kids are seemingly being sexualized by their parents, and are often performing for the gratification of adults.
Desmond, for example, performs in gay bars, for tips.
So, why the celebration of it?

We had a male classmate in grade school who did ballet. That was weird enough.

We had a male classmate in grade school who did ballet. That was weird enough. We had the same. The girls flocked to him. Little did they know... Nice guy. Well-liked for the most part. I remember people calling a fag on various occasions and if it bothered him, you couldn't tell. He always had this look on his face of "Is that the best you can do?"

Desmond dances in gay bars, for tips. The sexualization of children is OK as long as it's for the entertainment of the LGBTQ community because, as you know, that community can do no wrong in the eyes of the media.

And if we dare question whether it's appropriate for a child of that age to be doing something like that, we're called transphobes or whatever... It is scary to see some of the things the media gets behind these days.

I think people are right to point out the discomfort of the sexualization. That’s really bad it a lot of ways. But I don’t think I can really fault the decision to allow him to cross dress. If he wants to do it, let him.

Is it necessarily sexual that he's dancing in a gay bar? It certainly could be, but we're not talking about strip clubs here (I assume we would have heard if that were the case). And it would definitely be weird if it was a 10-year-old girl dancing in a regular bar for tips.
The whole subculture is so alien to me that I have no idea what's sexual and what's not. My only frame of reference here is RuPaul. (Although I have a high school friend who I see on social media moonlighting as Shimmy Hendrix every now and again.)

I just have very little frame of reference for the culture of gay bars, and even less of one for drag, and I'm acutely aware of that as I read these stories. Also, your simultaneous discussions on this thread and the music thread are delightful. All your mental imagery this morning is devoted to dancing in different types of bars!

Which is funny since I don't drink and I haven't been to a strip club since a bachelor party 12 years ago... I've been in gay bars before. My cousin, who is the closest thing I have to a brother, is gay. Gay bars are basically like most regular bars, with different music. Safe to say I've never been to a drag bar. Although, isn't just about every bar in New Orleans a drag bar?

I don't know the right answer to this.
I don't know the wrong answer to this.
I don't know the appropriate answer to this.
But Jesus Fucking Christ ...

This is the world we live in today... A lot of people (not people here) are afraid to say that an 11-year-old dressing in drag and performing at a bar is inappropriate because they're worried about being called transphobic.
