By being a total idiot, Trump bumbles his way into knocking Democrats off-message again and again and again. But, now, the dilemma: What else do they have to run against, in 2020, other than, "This guy is an embarrassing oaf." The economy is good. No foreign crises. Do enough people care that the most undignified man in American public life is soiling the most dignified position in American public life? I doubt it.

I'm not defending the guy, but not EVERYTHING about him (or done by him or on his behalf) is assholery/dumbfuckery ...

He's an oaf who does and says outrageous things due to his oafishness.

Are you sure he's "bumbling" his way into knocking the Democrats off-message? Yes. I don't think he has the intelligence or self-control to consciously set traps. He's an oaf who does and says outrageous things due to his oafishness. I think he says and does outrageous things with the intention of getting people to pay attention to and talk about him, and only him. He wants the entire spotlight, and the fact that it happens to get his opponents talking about him rather than themselves (and gets the media and everyone else talking about him, rather than his opponents) is a super bonus for him. Donald Trump is the next evolutionary step in P.T. Barnum's famous philosophy: I don't care what you say about me, just spell the name right.

He's a master showman. He owns the spotlight. He wields it like a sword.

I think he says and does outrageous things with the intention of getting people to pay attention to and talk about him, and only him. I refuse to assign some sort of master-stroke plan to Trump's actions. Donald Trump simple repeats and forms policy based on whatever he heard last on Fox News or Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh, and he fills government vacancies with whomever those same people tell him would make a good member of the administration. That's it. He's exactly like your least favorite meme-sharing relative, except he's rich, which made him perfectly qualified to be President.

But he knows being over the top gets attention, and that's what he wants. So he says one over-the-top thing after another after another after another. And, like I said, the fact it gets the Democrats off-message is just a bonus. It's not necessarily the goal, but it's a beneficial side-effect to him.

What’s the excuse for Mr. I Love The Troops not going to Arlington today?
It’s two miles from the Whitehouse.
Draper is right. You just can’t defend Trump on his merits. It’s like a reality show where he sees how much he can force people to humiliate themselves defending his selfish bullshit.

It’s like a reality show where he sees how much he can force people to humiliate themselves defending his selfish bullshit. The NYT has an op-ed about the growth of hyper-partisanism onSunday. Even in this century, any ability to evaluate the other “side” in a reasonably objective way has plunged, measurably. And the logical conclusion of that is this idiot, where otherwise sentient humans are defending a tabloid carnival barker. I know the stock answer to any gripe that Trump has robbed the office of its dignity is “Bill Clinton.” Look, I’m not going to defend blow jobs in the Oval Office. But those were at least INTENDED to be private actions. Trump runs his dumb trap or commits disgraceful actions in his PUBLIC role. Mrs. Whitman and I engaged in some pretty undignified behavior on Saturday night when the kids were (finally) asleep. But this morning, I showed up at the office and wrote professional-sounding emails.

It is a reality show to him but it's also that he considers himself King of America now.
It's the wackiest goddamn thing to happen in the history of this country.

Sorry to have been MIA for the Bret Stephens/Nate Silver discussion, as watching Stephens be revealed to be fucking terrible at his job is almost as enjoyable for me as watching Bari Weiss be revealed to be terrible at her job. But I think you guys missed the funniest part, which was that Stephens has gone more Maggie Haberman than Maggie Haberman when it comes to Twitter. As this tweeter pointed out, not only did Bret say he was done with Twitter, he announced that only his assistant would be checking his feed from now on. DD, this is not your best look.

The VA Secretary and the SecDef took part in a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of th Unknown yesterday.

The whole nerds-insulting-one-another-on-Twitter thing has gotten waaaaaaaaay tiresome. It's as if there are 1,000 oops, each taking a position based on a slightly different combination of priors, and then responding to slightly different takes (that would have to occur) by snidely playing the "It's too bad you're not the expert at this that I am" card.
