So, how's this going to play out? Does he admit he made it up -- and it appears to me as though the whole attack was made up? Is he charged with a crime? When does it become apparent to everyone that this was a hoax? And, if it was, then the "hate mail" may also be a hoax. CNN reporter says the cops have video og him alone at the Subway: the only image of Smollett police obtained from security cameras was inside the Subway sandwich shop near the location of the reported crime — and he was standing alone."Here's the Police spokesperson on the investigation:
“Chicago police detectives continue to investigate serious allegations of a potential racially charged hate crime that took place in the downtown area Tuesday morning around 2 a.m.
The Streeterville neighborhood where the alleged attack occurred has a very high density of city and private surveillance cameras. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, detectives canvassed and reviewed hundreds of hours of video and have now expanded the search area along the Chicago riverfront hoping to find video to be able to release a public description of the offenders. Unfortunately, thus far we have not found any helpful information on a suspect or a suspect's vehicle to be able to share.
We are taking this investigation very seriously and detective teams will broaden our search area and work around the clock to look for video on traffic cameras, CTA buses and neighboring thoroughfares which could have captured the offender's movements. The victim in this case is cooperating fully with detectives and our investigation continues.”

So whatever happened to the fractured rib? It seems to have fallen out of the story, right? It's no longer mentioned, but also doesn't appear to have been retracted/corrected. |

Unless he completely recants, and admits it was a hoax, some people will always believe him, which will make charging him very controversial. And, if he does recant, there's still going to be a lot of sympathy for him. Cops are going to be fucked either way. |

And, if he does recant, there's still going to be a lot of sympathy for him. Cops are going to be fucked either way. FWIW, this is setting up as another "litmus test" for America, like Kavanaugh and Rolling Stone's "Jackie" story. If you don't "believe" Smollett, it is because you don't #BelieveSurvivors, and because you are a homophobic, possibly racist, #MAGA supporter.
I didn't believe it because TMZ's initial reporting included a bunch of sensationalized details with no sourcing, and there have been nothing but red flags coming out since.
I'm not interested in making this form of Pascal's Wager.
