Now that the offseason has officially started, so has the countdown to the Bears' big decision, which history says will be wrong. Caleb Williams has more red flags than Taylor Lorenz's Tinder profile. Good luck sleeping the next two months, Ryan Poles.

We were talking about it last night at my Super Bowl gathering, and agreed it's tough for him to get much traction among the fan base here, because basically the worst game he ever played was the one game everyone here watched.

Oh, yeah, definite crossover fan bases. The big thing I can't get out of my head is that image of him crying in his mother's arms after the loss to Utah. Passion and emotion are one thing, but ... Now he's doing photo shoots in crazy outfits. That last thing, in and of itself, is not a huge deal, but I just wonder how much harder it will be to judge the nearly impossible -- a player's dedication to the game -- in the NIL age, when guys like him are pulled in so many directions and enter the league already having made millions. Aside from his paycheck, I do not envy Ryan Poles, who I can't imagine will get a good night's sleep for the next 10 weeks. Mostly, I just worry that Williams has too many interests and not enough tunnel vision to become the generational talent some say he is destined to be.

Here in New England people are big concerned about Caleb Williams crying with his mom after losses. There’s a quote along the lines of ‘I just wanna go home curl in a ball and watch some shows’ that’s roundly mocked

With the increased salary cap, will the Chefs be able to keep both Chris Jones and L'Jarius Sneed? Vikings have an interesting situation with Cousins and Danielle Hunter as free agents and Jefferson wanting a new deal. Bucs have a bunch of free agents they'd like to bring back -- Mayfield, Evans, Winfield and Lavonte David.

Evans is so good, but I wonder what the market will be for a guy entering his 11th season. WRs seem to fall off a cliff once they lose it, especially the bigger ones.

Merrill Hoge being interviewed on local radio about the top QBs. He was a lot less dismissive of Williams than he was a couple weeks ago. Said he really likes Jayden Daniels but didn't get into why. Said he thinks Maye is a terrible prospect because he's too inconsistent and "stiff."

I saw where another quarterback guru said that Williams has a long release time. I'm not sure if Chicago's collective mental health can handle another one of those.

I saw where another quarterback guru said that Williams has a long release time. I'm not sure if Chicago's collective mental health can handle another one of those. Speaking of which, I've heard the concern about him taking too many sacks. Herbstreit said after watching more film that his accuracy and elusiveness are "elite," but he doesn't know if he can make those throws in a "dirty pocket." To be fair, few D-1 prospects have to worry about that in college, so that's more of an indictment of the college game and how it doesn't do a lot to prepare quarterbacks for the next level than it is of Williams. I did read the other day that Warner said Williams was the only prospect he saw consistently go through his reads and not just use half the field. So there's that.

Seventy percent of Bears fans would disagree, but this from a Combine notes article is exactly right: "Even if Fields continues to blossom elsewhere, the odds favor the Bears being better off with a lot of money, high draft picks and a quarterback who will be affordable for the next four years."
The big issue now is what they can get for him. The talk of getting a first-rounder has always been nonsensical narrative pushing, but with so many well-rated quarterbacks in this draft and Cousins available in free agency, I'm not sure they will get a second-rounder for him.

I don't think this part is true. There are certainly some staunch Fields supporters, but I think the consensus ranges from, "they'll OK either way," to being fully on board with Williams. There is also option No. 3 - trade both Fields and the No. 1 pick, and select another QB such as Daniels or McCarthy.

Maybe he's related to Carl Everettt.

I was just mocking the lazy blog headlines that pounced! on some random unofficial survey to hype up Fields and generate clicks for the last month or so of the season.
