Sure. It’s easy to not care about Paul Whalen. That’s been the case for most people, including most of the media, for the entire four years he’s been held. But, if you didn’t care about Griner, this was evidence that you were racist, homophobic, and misogynistic. There you go standing up for the real victims again.

Why didn’t Trump get Whalen out? He likes people who weren’t captured.

That's silly. Our country was awesome until November of 2016. I'd heard November 2008. Pretty certain the downward slouch began in November of 1992.

What do we think of journalism angle here? On one hand, the actual public value in a “scoop” here is pretty low—since (like a free agency signing, etc.) the news will become public soon enough. (As opposed to, say, if you found out the Bush admin was spying on Americans without court orders, which might never come out, but-for your reporting.) And there’s the ever-present risk that reporting on the news actually changes it, by disrupting negotiations.
On the other hand, there is something a little unseemly about holding up a clearly newsworthy story at the request of the government.

Why didn’t Trump get Whalen out? Because the price was too high.

Why didn’t Trump get Whalen out? Because the price was too high. OK. Fair enough. Then why the focus on Whalen? How does he factor into this? It seems like people didn’t want Bout released under any circumstances.

The focus on Whalen just muddies the waters when discussing a swap that was obviously one-sided. I don’t think any rational person would argue that trading a WNBA player for the “Merchant of Death” is a good deal. But the focus on Whelan allows for the greatest percentage of people to take part in America’s pastime — ignoring reality.

Except focusing on him hurts the real argument — that it was a bad trade for bad reasons with potentially awful ramifications — and allows liberals to avoid the debate entirely. it actually HELPS libs.
