Sort of an offshoot to @karlfarbman international travel thread, coming from a guy who lives in America's Second City.
The world is a big place, and I'm sometimes surprised to read/learn about places that I was previously unfamiliar with.
Before the Ukraine invasion, I'm not sure I ever heard of Kharkiv, which is (or was) a city of 1.4 million people.
Iasi, the second largest city in Romania was mentioned in news coverage, as its been a landing point for refugees. I definitely never heard of it, and the pictures make it look spectacular.
So, what are some cool, lesser known, cities around the world?

I've been to New Hope. Has to have been 25 years ago, but I remember it as being very cute.
I've heard good things about Portsmouth.
Never heard of Zakopane. Looks cool.

I liked Cork a lot. Different, funkier than Dublin.
Bruges itself is lesser known than Brussels, but then Ghent is sort of a more authentic, less touristy version on Bruges.
Probably not a coincidence that Cork and Ghent are also college towns, to a degree, which seems to lend a sense of vibrancy to a city.

They’re the sites of three of the greatest days of my 20-something life (before I got soft). Zakopane is a mountain town, similar to what I imagine Aspen is like. The main strip through town is pedestrian-only, and there are bars all over the place and parties going on everywhere. Plus, there are awesome trails with awesome views of the mountains and the city. I spent a summer in Portsmouth in college, and it just struck me how nice everyone was. Lots of really cool coffee and music shops, and the theater scene was great as well. New Hope was the site of my first wedding. We went a few months prior to scope it out, and they rolled out the red carpet at the restaurant/B&B we ended up using. Also, if you’re outdoorsy, Luray, VA, and Colorado Springs also come to mind as really cool cities.

I love Portsmouth. Back when I was in the biz, my beat took me there every other year. Great downtown. Lots of activity. Great food, breweries, coffee shops. Just a great time.

Sanibel Island, off Fort Myers, is my idea of heaven on earth.
Everyone should visit Key West once. You'll either love it or never want to return.
I think Charlottesville, Va., is a sleeper. Lots of action up and down the main street, always something going on through UVa. We did the Charlottesville Wine Trail for three days and never ran out of things to do when we weren't drinking wine.
And another vote for New Hope.

Yeah, that’s awesome. I think it’s the largest snow maze in the world. There’s also an awesome network of tunnels littered with awesome ice and snow sculptures right next door:
