I'm having trouble not reading about the early stages of the Coronavirus' spread, and thinking of the early chapters of World War Z. Thankfully President Obama, now well into his third term, seems to have a handle on things.

Fill up the jails! Should help with in-bighouse education programs, at least.

Our main university attorney and our VP for Research spoke about this issue at Faculty Senate a couple of meetings ago. I don't do funded research of any sort, so I kind of zoned out. I imagine there are those in my college, though, who are shittin' bricks ... lot of "China money" sloshing through the accounts.

Never heard of that publication re: the first tweet. Has anybody else reported that level of death toll?

Nothing would surprise me, given how little the Chinese government cares about their citizens, but I'm not ready to accept this as fact either.

Agreed on all counts, and I hadn't heard of the Organiser either. Appears to be an Indian publication.

We've lost track of this one, but: --An American died in Wuhan www.nytimes.com/2020/02/08/world/asia/coronavirus-china.html--Quarantines continue, including on the cruise ship in Japan, where cases rose from 20 to 61; they're scheduled to be released Feb. 19, but any new cases will re-start the quarantine clock --And the biggie ... the doctor who tried to sound an early warning and was Wuhan hospital announces death of whistleblower doctor Li WenliangLi was among a number of supposed "rumormongers" detained in December for spreading news about the virus. He had warned about a potential "SARS-like" virus spreading in Wuhan. Nothing Li said was incorrect, but it came as officials in the city were downplaying the severity of the outbreak and its risk to the public.
There were more apparent efforts to control the narrative even after Li's death -- leading to widespread anger.
Earlier on Thursday night, several state media outlets had reported Li's death, following which Chinese social media erupted in mourning. Hours of confusion followed, with Wuhan Central Hospital releasing a statement saying Li was still alive and in critical condition, adding that they were "making attempts to resuscitate him."
State media subsequently deleted their previous tweets, only for the hospital to then confirm his death. In that environment, there's severe doubt that the death toll is anywhere near as low as the official count of 500.

Anecdotally, I know a family that went to China in December for winter break, and still hasn’t been allowed to come back to the U.S. Couldn’t tell you if they’re infected, alive or dead at this point. Hoping for the best.

The human toll is devastating. As with most parents in China, when I’m not anxiously scanning my phone for the latest news of the coronavirus outbreak, I’m consumed by another pressing question: How will I survive another day stuck indoors with my kids?parenting.nytimes.com/health/coronavirus-quarantine

I started a book from a couple years ago about animal-to-human virus transmission. It’s by David Quammen, a three-time National Magazine Award winner who apparently specializes in this weird niche field. Interesting so far. Also, fuck bats.
