It feels to me more like "I'm not into social media anymore" is the new "I don't own a TV." And as someone who hasn't been on social media in about a decade (no this doesn't count), I'm appalled. You're on social media if you're on here. More like anti-social media at times.

I used to pop off of Facebook quite a bit about politics. I thought I was bringing a thoughtful and reasonable voice to the table - and, really, I was! But literally almost no good can come of it. Now that I’m actually part of a community in which I need to interact with other humans for my children’s sake, I post almost nothing of consequence, at all. I immediately hide anything that shows up on my timeline that includes any hint of politics. Edit: And I have done so ever since I got on Facebook.

I would bet that 100 of them are blocked because they won't shut the fuck up about politics on either side.

I unfriended several people who were posting 20-25 daily examples of the success of some weight-loss program. If it's politics, I just block them. But if it's blatant commercialism blended with concern trolling, then they're out.

But if it's blatant commercialism blended with concern trolling, then they're out. There was someone on the old board who I unfriended because he would comment on every single thing I ever posted, which were usually pictures of my kids. It was kind of creepy. He friended me again about a day after I unfriended him. Then I just blocked him. It's easier and people don't get triggered if they find out you unfriended them.

In these cases, I want them to be triggered.

I unfollowed my brother in 2016 because almost everything he was posting was political. I started following him again about midway through the next year after going to his page and seeing he had gone back to reasonably normal.
I am fully expecting to have to unfollow him again at some point this year.

Has getting right with the online world replaced going to the gym as the hottest New Year’s resolution? It feels to me more like "I'm not into social media anymore" is the new "I don't own a TV." And as someone who hasn't been on social media in about a decade (no this doesn't count), I'm appalled. SJ.com and Rejects are... social media.

SJ.com and Rejects are... social media. Yeah, but I understand the differentiation. We aren't posting into our big wide world when we're here, and nothing I write on this board is going to affect my relationships or opinions of me outside of it. (Unless we meet in Chicago one day and I spit in your hot dog.) That's the kind of thing Pearlman is talking about.

I can only go by what Jones told me, but it's massive.

People joke about this being a “safe space.” But that’s what it is. SJ, too. That’s not a criticism at all.

SJ.com and Rejects are... social media. Like LTL said, there's a big enough difference between this place and the "traditional" social media sites that I don't include it. But I do know that in the most technical terms, it qualifies.

This is what Gandhi meant by 'be the change you want to see.'

I started following him again about midway through the next year after going to his page and seeing he had gone back to reasonably normal. I am fully expecting to have to unfollow him again at some point this year. A very large percentage of the people I blocked are family members and former co-workers (most from journalism)... One person from the old board has pulled the, "If you don't agree with me, please unfriend me now..." that so many others have done... That's usually my cue to block them, whether I agree with them or not.
