"The good news is you make $50 an hour. The bad news is, coffee costs $17 per cup, a midsized sedan costs $500,000 and a three-bedroom, 1,200 square foot home will run you $3.5 million."

My older daughter's dipping her toes in the Austin housing market, which is insanely expensive (for single-family detached units) relative to her income. She's a very cautious person by nature, and the ins-and-outs of homebuying are pretty intimidating for her. I've been trying to assist, but it's been almost 20 years since I did a real-estate purchase. One of the especially frustrating things is that I can't for the life of me find some place on the interwebs that gives one a rough idea of mortgage scenarios WITHOUT actually coming across with personal information. I finally just did a tentative inquiry with my bank this morning, which I'll probably regret once the mortgage officers and real estate agents start reaching out with unsolicited offers to "assist." I was just reading an article about how expensive homes in my neck of the woods are for Gen Zers. It leads with a guy bemoaning the fact that the budget for his first home does not allow him to buy the new, large home he prefers. 🙄

Thought this was an interesting story about the unintended consequences of government policy, at several different levels. San Francisco barred its city government and agencies from traveling to, or doing business with, 30 states that had what the city considered offensive LGBTQ or abortion laws. It turned into a giant clusterfuck because apparently no one in city hall grasped how wide a net that ban cast. It even prevented them from working with some local businesses who got bought out by companies who were in states on the naughty list. abc7news.com/san-francisco-procurement-business-ban-boycott-sf-park-and-rec/14428958/

good to see they have a simple solution to deal with all the bigoted states who have offensive LHBTQ laws. now they can work on finding a solution to the complex problem of people defecating in the streets.

I was in Austin the middle of last week and stumbled onto a too-perfect glimpse of some of the absurdities in play in especially progressive cities ... Do note the motto on the back of the code compliance vehicle. IMG_3637.HEIC (521.84 KB)

Liz Warren will cite price gauging and corporate greed as reasons for inflation, but she'll never talk about labor costs, as either a reason for inflation, or in terms of the economic activity that that never happens because of labor costs.
