Yes, the small table's political discussion is so much better.

Read all eight pages of this for some reason. Now I'm going to go smoke a cigarette.

Maybe DW better start posting more frequently. It's not totally untrue! I need to get back up to speed on current events/politics so I can adequately challenge YF!

This is silly. It's great to point to 18 accusations, but if you don't have even one that survives the most minimal scrutiny, what are they worth. You're not willing to tell me which one you find the most credible, and why? That's some bullshit, and it's a tactic designed to destroy people, without having to provide any evidence. The whole, "end of conversation" way of arguing a topic is ridiculous. It's exactly what happened to Kavanaugh -- who never met, or was in the same room as his accuser. Guy who beats drum for believing women in every context, on every thread, makes singular exception for the 18 women accusing his hero. Takes credible allegations, characterizes them as not credible, and wants someone else to prove it to him after he has dismissed every single word written or said about it to this point. Tells me it's "silly" and "some bullshit" when I disengage. Nah. Fuck that. It's all there, but at this point you could have pictures of the events and you wouldn't believe. I've been thinking this for a while, but this has crystallized it: Our political discussion on this board is stupid. I don't learn anything. All we get are alt-right-adjacent tweets and commentary that distort what actually happened, as well as re-litigation of events from the early '90s. I can't tell you how many times in the past few months I've read about something here, gone to read about it elsewhere to follow up, and realized that the discussion we're having is not ***AT ALL*** what actually happened. It was completely the other way around on the old board between say 2012 and 2016. That was a great link source within the discussion. This is just YankeeFan trying to skew everything and all of us falling in behind it. If someone came and took stock of this board's politics in the main, it would look mostly like an AstroTurfing effort from the Trump campaign. It's crazy. It's disappointing. Everyone likes the freedom of this board. But I gain no information or enlightenment when it comes to politics. Maybe the sports threads will start to get more action. The youth sports thread has been hot stuff for a while now.

The politics thread leading up to the 2016 election was a great way to follow political news, regardless of what side you were on, and we had a lot of smart battles with smart people of dueling ideologies and a good dose of centrist thought sprinkled in. Now it’s just a steady drum beat telling us how great Trump is, and if he’s ever not great, it’s still ok because Bill Clinton was worse, you hypocrite.

I rescind my post from several pages back and vow to begin following politics again. I have been busy trying to get 9- and 10-year-olds to play baseball well and affirm my self-worth.

YankeeFan, 2046, in response to a message board post from @double Down on RejectsofSJRejects.com: "Fine, I promise not to ever vote for Donald Trump again." Narrator: The Constitution having been scrapped during Donald Trump's second term, he's voting to put Ivanka Trump in office for a record fourth term. RejectsofSJRejects > Wenalway “The internet? Is that thing still around?” - Homer Simpson

I'm just spitballing here, but regarding this homogenization of opinion within two places, I don't know, maybe there should be, you know, one board where 40- and 50-year-old men and women are treated like adults, permitted to disagree, permitted to joke around, even .. about the board!
Crazy talk, I know.
Has anyone ever tried it?

[ Part of the issue, I think, is there’s very little important information to be learned about day-to-day politics, generally, as opposed to policy. I’d rather discussions focus on the UBI, or Big Tech and Antitrust, or zoning regulations, or, if politics it must be, something more engaging like data analysis or dissecting the journalism, etc. I was a little bit disappointed, for example, that the recent SCOTUS opinions got very little attention here despite having several posts dedicated to them. I’ve thought about starting a weekly thread where we debate one idea or article, but didn’t want to come off as too pretentious (and also am a bit lazy). Also considered starting a “General Business and Economics” thread which (I foolishly hope) might have more rationale discussion.
