You too can run a seven hour marathon. (Watch the video. The link is to something else.) I had a group of old high school friends and acquiantances who posted for months and months and months about how they were training together for the Chicago Marathon, how proud the husband was of "wifey," and on and on and on. They crossed the finish line together in 6 hours and 33 minutes. So?

So, they didn’t “run a marathon”. They went for a long, slow, flat walk.

You can garner a lot of admiration and social currency in exchange for comparatively little effort and accomplishment.

I don't even need to be "impressed." But don't post for months on end about your dedicated training, then leg out a 6:33. And these were former high school athletes here. Far more accomplished high school athletes than me.

Six and half hours is four miles an hour. That’s walking speed.
At least a five mile per hour pace means you’re doing a slow jog.

If you didn't run marathons yourself, would you care as much? Maybe. I have said that small-town firefighters pull way too much wool as a result of their comparatively mundane jobs, so it's not like this line of thinking is confined to 26.2.

Public streets shouldn’t be closed for an extra two hours so you can walk a marathon course.
Volunteers want to go home.
Get going, or go home.
Certainly after six hours they should be clearing the course.

What time would sufficiently impress you? Lower than 6 1/2 hours. I'm impressed already. If I'm going 26 miles, there's going to be a vehicle involved.

I think we’ve finally found a debate more pointless than “What is longform and who has earned the right to claim they are part of the club?” and it is “Are slow fatties fake marathoners?”
