A lot of people like to scare people with World War III talk. But Putin is the last person who would start such a thing. First of all, Russia's economy can't support the current regional war much less fighting enemies from the outside. Secondly, Putin is so ensconsed that he's obsessed with legacy. Can't solidify that by starting a world war. He just needs to hang on doing his regional dictator thing a while longer and before you know it, Ivy league students will embrace him and the oop Dems will no longer have a bad word to say about him. The bigger threat to world instability is a group like Hamas and benefactor states like Iran. But with the current administration pandering to the bad guys in the Middle East the PR needs to focus on Russia through Ukraine.* *We won't talk about Russia's ties to the same people the current administration is trying to appease.
People keep wishing Putin would drop dead and, again, I'm right there with them — until you realize that, I think, Medvedev is the next man up and he's got all of Putin's evil without any of the sanity or political shrewdness.
I don't believe --- and surely don't hope --- that Medvedev is next man up, although I understand how it could seem that way. My wife supports just about everything Russia does, and she's been wondering for a decade why Putin keeps Medvedev around. And that was before he started sounding so unhinged. There is some speculation that he's trying to distance himself from the stereotype that he is Putin's lackey, his "less-evil twin." Consider the latter a success, I guess. That being said, concern about Putin's successor being worse (to the West) is valid. And people hoping for his assassination are nuts. Russia would go scorched earth if that happened.

It's hard to believe someone of Bernstein's academic background would be confused by fiscal policy.

I knew smallpotatoes had found work in the public sector, I just didn't realize his application to the Council of Economic Advisors had borne fruit.

A "macroeconomic guy" who doesn't know how money works. What, pray tell, does he know that makes him suitable for the role he fills?
