What makes it a disaster vs a success? Everything is sold out, it's a lot of bs that's not about the game and a lot of people show up, no matter where it is.

There aren’t enough hotels or nightlife near Arlington Heights. Everything would be centered downtown. The “Fan experience”, the parties, the attendees. And then what, run busses or special trains to the game? I don’t see that happening. Do you think the Cowboys’ stadium is in downtown Dallas? Or the Dolphins’ stadium is in Miami? The Giants’ stadium isn’t even in the same state as New York City. All of those have hosted Super Bowls in the not-too-distant past. Jerry World last has a SB in 2011, and ain't getting another one anytime soon. That was a payoff for the new stadium. And, maybe the Bears get one too to help secure the stadium deal. But, I still doubt it. And, the Final Four has less incentive to come here. And, Miami? Look, the game is the least important part of SB week. Companies -- including the league, each team (they all get a block of tickets), and it's broadcast partners -- got to schmooze clients for a week in Miami when the game was held there. The C level client is going to spend a week in January in Chicago. It just won't happen. Obviously, the actual draw can make some difference as far as broad ticket demand goes, but again, most of these decisions as to who is going are made before anyone even know who is playing. Everyone wants to go if the game is in Miami or Vegas.

The business of the Super Bowl happens before the game. A ton of private jets will depart the SB city BEFORE the game. The business involves hosting top level, decision making clients. And, they will go to a game in Miami, or New Orleans, or Arizona, because they can play golf all week, and enjoy the parties. (Or go to strip clubs all week if the game is in Tampa. LOL.) The average fan is not what matters. Yes, every ticket will be sold no matter where the game is played, but being in Minneapolis, when it is two degrees below zero is not fun for anyone.

Bill Simmons ripped Houston so badly when it hosted the Super Bowl that it never got another one.
And Houston’s weather in January is much better — or at least more predictable — than Dallas or Atlanta.

Simmons’ “Real World” theory — that a Super Bowl should never be hosted in a city that has not hosted the “Real World” MTV show — does weigh in Chicago’s favor.
But they would never have a “Real World Arlington Heights”.

Bill Simmons has influence over where the Super Bowl is held, outstanding.

The League was mortified by the coverage that Houston received as the host city, and Simmons was the biggest critic of it.
And the game has not been back.

Why not the same thing in Chicagoland? If they did it, that would be the model. But NY/NJ got the game for a number of reasons, dating back all the way to 9/11. They had well liked owners. They had a new stadium. It’s fucking New York. They liked the idea of a cold weather game, in the elements (which they then regretted, and said they would never do again). It’s the headquarters of the league, and all of their media partners. That’s not Chicago. Chicago sucks in January. Sucks hard. And aside from a new stadium in a shitty suburb, would have none of those other factors in its favor.

Don't remember the exact temperature but it was definitely quite a bit higher than the average NJ temp for most days in Feb. Much like new Yankee Stadium, the old Giants Stadium was better, well maybe not but the new one is only a slight improvement. Old Yankee Stadium > new Yankee Stadium.
