Please. Clarify. What's the dumb part? Boom said when the labor pool tightens, it's going to cause an economic slow down. He also wants to tighten the labor pool by deporting millions of workers. Besides just calling me stupid, I'd love it if you'd explain what I posted that's dumb. I invite any contribution from you which goes beyond, "your post is dumb." First of all, you asked boom to "reconcile" a positive statement -- "This is how I think things are" -- with a normative position -- "This is how I think things should be done." His (stipulated arguendo) position that illegal immigrants should be deported has fuck-all to do with whether his assessment of the labor market is correct. Even dumber, however, is your notion that "deport[ing] all the illegals" of course means fewer recent immigrants here. You know, I know and work with a whole helluva lot of recent immigrants ... ain't a damn one of them afraid of any illegal immigration crackdown. Boom wants to deport illegals knowing - based on his own assessment that a tight job market will restrict growth - it will lead to economic contraction. Population growth and economic growth are related topics, and I don’t think his two positions are consistent with each other. ... Unless he concedes he’ll accept economic contraction as a trade off for throwing out all the illegals.

It would not be that heavy. This issue continues because it is politically expedient to both sides. The politics part is always the heavy lifting. Instead of detention centers why not employment centers that can match up immigrants with employers that have jobs to fill. I agree, but you seem to vote for the “throw them all out!” crowd.

... I don’t think his two positions are consistent with each other. Imagine Joe standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon and saying, "Wow, what a magnificent sight!" Now imagine asking Joe to "reconcile" that statement with his interest in cutting federal funding for the National Parks. That's what you're doing ... and it's dumb.

I've misunderstood boom's stance on immigration. Mea Culpa. You can win, too. I'm dumb. You're smart. 'Gratz!

Here's question that I've been pondering since the chicken processing plant raid. Does the fact that illegals are willing to take those jobs at low hourly rate keep pay scales artificially low for non skilled labor jobs? It would seem to follow that if jobs could not be filled that company would have to raise wages to interest more people in the work.

That price will be surely passed on to the consumer - which is, of course, the same as the Right’s argument against the raising of the minimum wage. It’s a sticky wicket.

Business owners also. At some I think we all have to accept idea that's it's okay to pay more for stuff and not cave to fear. It would be liberating
