Not many people are willing to walk 26 miles at once. But most can. A relatively small percentage CAN run 26 miles. Nothing wrong with feeling like you accomplished something, but not all accomplishments are equal. As Sharky alluded to, don’t pass off what you did as something it is not. I more alluded to Dick being more bothered about this because his marathon valor has been stolen by the unfit marathon walkers.

Ok, so what time would you not be skeptical of? And how serious do you have to look in all of the race photos? This serious. Ok, and how about the time? We know it isn't 6.5 hours. How about 6?

It's like ol' boy who repaired refrigerators in the Marines.
I mean, yeah, you were technically a Marine, but come on now ...

That's a fucking long stroll. Whenever I've run one and we pull away a couple hours later and there are still people out there laboring, I'm just like, holy shit, fuck that. I'm glad those years are behind me. I have mixed feelings on it. If they want to better themselves for walking 26.2 miles, more power to them. I have a problem with them being celebrated for it. They should have a problem with them being celebrated for it. Maybe at the next cookout, someone will say, "Oh, you run marathons, so does my 76-year-old mother-in-law... The two of you should work out together."

This serious. Ok, and how about the time? We know it isn't 6.5 hours. How about 6? People can do whatever floats their boat. But if you are giving daily training updates and then blaze a time that's above the official race cutoff, unless you are 80 years old, it's my personal opinion that you probably weren't sufficiently trained to "run" a marathon. But, again, whatever to what I think. It's the phenomenon that gets me. "Triers then. Big hearts then." It's like there is something additionally valorous about running a marathon slow. I'm not sure you get that in many other endeavors and, again, I think a lot of it is virtue signaling.

When my wife proudly told me she got her one-mile time under eight minutes recently, I smiled and told her that's great, because I'm not an asshole.

I don't really have an answer for this because I know from experience that not everybody quite understands what they are getting into when they sign up for a marathon. I blame a lot of it on Hal Higdon and other gurus who put out popular programs that convince people they don't have to train that hard.

I think it’s valid for someone who has devoted much of their life to something to be skeptical of just how special it is to do that thing in a way that is relatively not special. And OF COURSE this is the kind of thing that gets Dick going. It’s about marathons for God’s sake. That anyone is surprised by his take on this is, um, surprising.

So in your personal opinion, what result for a middle-aged couple would make you believe their daily training updates? Seriously, just name a time. You've run way more marathons than I have. You ran a 5-hour marathon your first time out. Did you train sufficiently for that one? Is five hours the cut off?

She's not athletic, but she works really hard to stay in shape, and I obviously appreciate that, as opposed to myself, who is athletic and is not in the shape he should be in.
